Wamu credit cards were amongst the most competitive in the industry. It was also famously referred to as the Wal-Mart of Banking by its Chairman and CEO, Mr. Kerry Killinger, in 2003. Killinger’s goal was to transform wamu banking to cater to the needs of the middle and lower-class consumers.
However, the strategy went haphazard as Wamu pushed for sales agents to approve loans , whilst placing a minimal importance on the borrowers income and assets. The strategy seemed simple to the company.
Sell more and worry less about defaults. Variable rate loans were introduced to attract consumers as they had higher fees than other loans, and let Wamu record profits on the interest for payments the borrowers deferred on.
However, panic struck the company in December 2007, when Wamu reorganized its home loan division, shutting down 160 such offices and razing 2600 positions from its home loan department staff. This was an appalling 22% reduction.
Meanwhile, JP Morgan Chase pushed for a quick deal with Wamu. However, Killinger refused to budge, looking at the price per share offered by Morgan Chase. Finally, after things went out of hand, Killinger stepped down from his position as Chairman, though retaining his position as the Chief Executive Officer.
As for the wamu credit card payment address, it’s clear now, I guess… Those sticking to the traditional mailing methods can use the above address.
What followed in mid-September was even more embarrassing for Wamu. Its share price closed at a paltry $2. This was in contrast to its price in September 2007, just a year ago, when it valued a good $30 per share! It had also enjoyed tremendous success having traded at $45 at a point in the previous year.
The events which followed led Wamu being auctioned off the JP MorganChase, and auction conducted by the FDIC. The bank was seized and it was handed over to JP MorganChase.
Now, MorganChase did not acquire any of Wamu’s equity obligations, though it had planned to issue in common stock, a sum of $8 billion In order to recapitalize the bank. The stockholders were wiped out .This seizure of Wamu bank was the trigger for the largest bank failure in American financial history.
Wamu credit card payment address still exists and you can forward your payments there. However, the company running their business now is JP Morgan Chase.
